GDPR Information
The General Data Protection Regulation (“GDPR”) came into force in the UK on 25th May 2018. It is directly applicable to UK businesses. This means the UK government did not need to implement any legislation in order for it to have effect. It is the responsibility of any business or similar organisation to ensure compliance with the principles of the GDPR.
As a self-employed sleep trainer, you are operating a business. As part of the running of your business, you will be processing personal data. The GDPR protects personal data.
Personal data is data that relates to a living individual who can be identified:
(a) from those data, or
(b) from those data and other information which is in the possession of, or is likely to come into the possession of, the data controller
and includes any expression of opinion about the individual and any indication of the intentions of the data controller or any other person in respect of the individual.
Personal data can include anything that makes an individual identifiable, for example email addresses.
Some types of personal data receive higher levels of protection because they are sensitive personal data. This means that they relate to an individual’s:
(a) racial or ethnic origin;
(b) political opinions;
(c) religious beliefs or other beliefs of a similar nature;
(d) trade union membership;
(e) physical or mental health or condition;
(f) sexual life;
(g) commission or alleged commission of any criminal offence; or
(h) proceedings for any offence committed, or alleged to have been committed, the disposal of such proceedings, or the sentence of any court in such proceedings.
I have revised my data protection policy in line with the General Data Protection Regulation (“GDPR”), which came into force in the UK on 25th May 2018 and which applies to my business in exactly the same way that it does to businesses and other organisations.
